Nikolay
Morgunov

Nikolay Morgunov, born in Moscow in 1992, relocated to Barcelona in 2017, where he currently resides and creates. His work is characterized by minimalism, featuring predefined grids and spontaneous chaotic graphic sublayers.
Transparent grids, like lattices, are applied to the surface, revealing rather than hiding the image. Morgunov's works capture the trajectory left by human activity, intertwining various factors that define each period, such as sounds, colors, and energy.

The contrast between strict, straight lines—uncommon in nature—and occasional natural brushstrokes of coal creates a dichotomy. A third element, transparent resin mimicking water surfaces, blurs the boundaries of the canvas. This dichotomy portrays the dynamics of life and abandonment, exuding freshness or resembling dust. Morgunov describes his work as a game based on dogma and guesswork, capable of imitating real samples and influencing perception. The question lingers: What trajectory are we on now?

In contrast, the artist explores the perpetual process of creation. While working on a new piece, he continually questions whether each added element enhances the work or leads them back to the starting point—the blank canvas. Balancing denial and admission of certain elements allows him to develop his perspective, seeking a deeper approach to an existing form.

Nikolay finds fascination in the lack of a definitive endpoint to the creative process. Monumentality impresses him, and he aspires to recreate its impact on a more compact scale, emphasizing the interplay of components and their rhythmic effect in the absence of color. The artist believes that through repetition, seemingly disparate elements can merge to form a new, integrated look, where unity prevails over individuality.
